Bir aktris olma yolunda ilk adımlarını Atina Ulusal Drama Okulunda atmış, daha sonra Londra’da üç yıl geçirerek eğitimine RADA’da (the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art) devam etmişsin. Oyunculuk daha öncelerden beri hedeflediğin bir meslek miydi? Tam olarak ne zaman ve nasıl karar verdin? Ne tür zorluluklarla karşılaştın?
Gelecekte ne olmak istediğinden her zaman emin olan insanları bilirsiniz. Ben maalesef hiç bir zaman o şanslı insanlardan biri olamadım. Bu nedenle meslek konusunda bir karar kılmakta geç kaldım. Yani üstüne düşünülmüş bir plandan çok kaçınılmaz bir sonuç olduğunu düşünüyorum.
Oyunculuk kariyerimin peşinden kesin olarak gitme kararını aldığım günü iyi hatırlıyorum. O zamanlar bu alana dair öyle çok fazla bir deneyim sahibi değildim ve beni bu yola yönlendiren tek şey filmlere karşı beslediğim anormal sevgimdi. Kararımı verdikten sonra bir şekilde bu konuda bir değişikliğe gitmeyi hiç hayal etmedim. Yapmış olduğum bu seçimi sorguladığım zamanlar oldu ama açık konuşmak gerekirse, kendimi başka bir işle uğraşırken hayal edemedim.
Elbette birçok farklı zorlukla karşılaştım. Bunun başlıca nedeni, mesleğin tam olarak ne anlama geldiği konusunda hayal kırıklığına uğramamdı. Fark ettim ki, oyunculuk sadece sanatın kendisine dair değilmiş. Pazarlamanın, sosyalizasyonun ve PR’ın bir kombinasyonuymuş. Her ne kadar ilk başta bundan nefret etsem de, en sonunda mesleği bir bakıma böyle kabul ettim ve razı oldum. Oyunculuk endüstrisi çok acımasız. İnanılmaz derecede bir rekabet var. Çok fazla başarısızlıkla sonuçlanan seçmeler ve reddedilişler barındırıyor içinde. Lakin, her şey rayına oturtulduğu takdirde, oyunculuk kesinlikle bireyin karşılığını ve mükafatını fazlasıyla aldığı bir iş haline geliyor.
Antik Yunanistan yeryüzünün bilinen ilk efsanevi oyuncuların ve yazarların kaynağıydı. Başka bir deyişle, tiyatronun temelleri doğmuş olduğun topraklarda ataların tarafından atıldı. Yunan bir aktris olarak, omuzlarında böyle bir tarihsel gerçekliğin manevi yükünü ve sorumluluğunu hissettiğin oluyor mu? İçinden gelmiş olduğun kültürün, icra ettiğin sanatı etkilediğini ve şekillendirdiğini düşünüyor musun?
Harika soru. Evet, etkilediğine inanıyorum. Oyunculuğa ilk adımımı attığım zamanlarda klasik/antik temelleri esas alarak eğitim sunan drama okullarına başvurmaya karar vermiştim. Bunun bana oyunculuk için daha derinlikli ve zengin bir yaklaşım sunacağına inanıyordum. Bugün bile hala okumaktan, izlemekten ve bir parçası olmaktan en çok keyif aldığım oyunlar klasiklerdir. Özellikle Antik Yunanlıların yazmış olduğu tragedyalara karşı bir zaafım var. O dönemlerde yaşamış yazarların eserlerinde bugün bile inanılmaz derecede güncel olan konulara dokunduklarını düşünüyorum. Onların zekası, insan doğası ve dünya algıları beni her zaman şok etmeyi başarıyor.
Diğer yandan, bahsettiğiniz gibi bir yük veya baskı hissediyorum diyemem ama metne ve oyuna karşı kesinlikle bir sorumluluk hissediyorum, özellikle bir tiyatro oyununda yer alıyorsam.
Mesele içinde bulunacağın projelere geldiğinde, hayat vermek istemeyeceğin ya da seslendirmekten kaçınacağın karakterler var mı? Mesela Türk bir karakteri canlandırmaktan rahatsızlık duyar mısın? Bu tür sınırlama ve kısıtlamaların oyunculuğun ruhuyla ve özüyle çeliştiğini düşünüyor musun?
Hayır, hayat vermek istemeyeceğim veya seslendirmek istemeyeceğim hiç bir karakter yok. Elbette Türk bir karakteri canlandırmaktan büyük keyif duyardım. Her ne kadar aksan konusunda tam anlamıyla yetkin olmasam da ve birkaç cümle dışında Türkçe bilmesem de, kim bilir, belki bir gün…
Bir oyuncu olarak canlandıracağınız karaktere karşı bir ön yargı sahibi olmanın, temel olarak mesleğin ilkelerine tamamen karşı olduğunu düşünüyorum. Elbette, bu tip ön yargılar oyunculuğun ruhuyla örtüşmez.
Bana sorarsanız, oyunculuk dünyanın en güzel mesleklerinden bir tanesi. Bunun en büyük nedeni, hakkını vererek yapıldığı takdirde insanoğlunu diğer tüm mesleklerden çok daha derinlikli bir şekilde anlamanızı sağlıyor. Mesleğimi çok seviyorum çünkü bir diktatörden tutunda sinir bozucu sahtekar bir karaktere bürünmeniz istenebilir ve ister sevin ister sevmeyin, karakter ne olursa olsun onu canlandırmak ve seyircinin o karakterin hikayesine karşı olan ilgisini kabartmakla yükümlüsünüz. Bunu başarabilmek için, karakterin iç dünyasında bir yolculuğa çıkarak neyi neden ve nasıl yaptığını ve neden diğerlerine öyle davrandığını anlamak durumundasınız. Aktörler/aktrisler kimseyi yargılamamalılar. Hiç kimseyi. Ben bunu çok büyüleyici buluyorum. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey ile ilgili sorulara geçmeden önce, hazırlarken çok keyif aldığım ve “atıştırmalık sorular” olarak adlandırdığım bölüme geçmek istiyorum.
Her ne kadar aşkları pek çok insanın hayatına mal olmuş olsa da, sence Spartalı Helen aşkı Troyalı Paris ile küçük Asya’ya kaçmakla doğru bir karar vermiş midir?
Ha! Efsanenin doğru olduğunu ve Helen’nin aşk hayatının sıradan bir savaş hikayesini daha romantik ve ilginç hale getirmek için tasarlanmış bir uydurma olmadığını kabul edersek.. Bu durumda evet derdim. Menelaos daha diplomatik bir yaklaşım benimseyip o kadar insanın ölümüne sebep olmayabilirdi. Lakin o zaman ortada anlatacağımız bir hikaye olmazdı, öyle değil mi?
Hayatının geri kalanını Ege denizindeki bir adada geçirecek olsaydın seçimini hangi adadan yana kullanırdın?
Her ruh hali ve zaman için bir ada olduğunu düşünüyorum AMA iki ada var ki bendeki yerleri çok başkadır. Hydra ve Patmos. Hydra benim için ailemle çıktığımız seyahatler, çocukluğum ve yalın ayak oradan oraya koşuşturduğum sonu olmayan yazlardır. Patmos ise endişe ve dertlerden özgür kalma hissinin yeniden keşfidir. Benim için her ikisi de Never Never Land’in bir versiyonunu temsil ediyor. Tekrar çocuk olabileceğiniz bir yer. Hiç bir zaman büyümeyeceğiniz ve size her zaman geçmişi ve gelecek olanı hatırlatmak için orada olan bir yer.
Diyelimki Pagan Yunanlar Olimposlu Tanrılar hakkında haklı çıktılar ve öldükten sonra şöyle bir manzarayla karşılaştın: Zeus altın tahtında oturmuş sana bakıyor. Nasıl bir tepki verirdin?
Pek çok soru sorardım. Daha sonra bana bir süpergüç vermesini isterdim ve bir de yıldırım show yapmasını beklerdim.
Tavernaya gittiğinde masanda görmek istediğin olmazsa olmazlar nelerdir?
Ekmek, balık, zeytinyağı, feta peyniri, dolma ve şarap.
Hiç ismini bilmediği veya hatırlayamadığı için sana Kassandra diye hitap eden oldu mu?
Buna benzer bir durumu Atina’da havalimanında yaşamıştım. Bir arkadaşımla telefonda konuşuyordum ve görevli bir polisin eliyle bana kenarı geçmemi ima ettiğini gördüm. Tabi birden panik yapmaya ve nelerin yanlış gidebileceğini düşünmeye başladım. Yanıma geldiğinde gözlerini bana dikti ve çok ciddi bir biçimde ismimi sordu. Kendisine olabildiğince kibar bir dille cevap verdim ve birden yüzünde kocaman bir gülümseme belirdi ve tüm sıranın önünde “AMAN TANRIM KASSANDRA İLE KONUŞTUĞUMA İNANAMIYORUM!!!” dedi. Sonra hızlıca diğer polis arkadaşlarının yanına giderek onlara tabletinden Assassin’s Creed Odyssey videoları göstermeye başladı. Baya garipti.
Oyunculuğu mu yoksa seslendirmeyi mi daha zor buluyorsun? İkisinin arasındaki benzerlikler ve farklılıklar neler? Birini diğerine tercih eder misin?
Tüm oyunculuk çeşitlerinin kendine has zorlukları var. Elbette tiyatro, sinema ve seslendirme için de geçerli bu. Üçü içinde gerekli olan doğru yaklaşımı bulduğunuz ve geliştirdiğiniz zaman işler biraz daha kolay hale geliyor.
Aralarından en çok seslendirmeyi zor buluyorum sanırım çünkü yanınızda sizinle rol alan birileri yok. Çoğu zaman aynı sahneyi paylaştığınız karakterlerin cevaplarını bile duymuyorsunuz çünkü daha kaydedilmemiş oluyor. Hayal gücünüzü çok fazla kullanmanız gerekiyor. Diğer yandan, seslendirmeyi yaptığınız mekan çok küçük ve hareket alanınız kısıtlı oluyor. Bu yüzden çoğu zaman sabit durmak mecburiyetinde oluyorsunuz. Kendinize sürekli olarak enerjinizi yüksek bir seviyede tutmanız gerektiğini hatırlatmak zorundasınız. Karakterin bulunacağı ortamı çok iyi bir şekilde hayal etmelisiniz. Eğer dışarıda olacaksa ona göre, içeride kapalı bir mekanda olacaksa veya çok yakınındaki bir kişiyle konuşuyorsa ona göre farklı bir öngörü ve konuşma şekli gerekiyor. Bunun hayal gücünü genişleten farklı ve ilginç bir yol olduğunu düşünüyorum.
Açıkçası hangisini hangisine tercih ettiğimi bilmiyorum. Video oyunlarının bir parçası olmayı çok seviyorum. Sanırım benim için bir ilk olduğundan dolayı bu tür projelere bir zaafım oluştu. Heyecan verici buluyorum.
Kassandra’yı seslendirecek aktris olmak için farklı seçme ve denemelerden geçtin. Bize bu süre zarfındaki hislerinden ve deneyimlerinden bahsetmek ister misin?
Odisyon için ilk defa telefon aldığım zaman tam olarak ne için seçmelere gireceğim hakkında hiçbir fikrim yoktu. Sadece büyük bir şirketin projesi olduğunu ve başrol için olduğunu biliyordum. Sanırım ilk defa nasıl bir proje içinde olduğumu anlamaya başladığım zaman Kanada’da seçmelerin son aşamasındaydım. Elbette Ubisoft’a gidip geldiğim için olasılıkların farkındaydım ama yinede hala inanamıyordum. Aslında, bir keresinde Alexios rolü için seçilmiş olan Michael ile aramızdaki uyumu test etmek için birkaç kayıt yapıyorduk ve bana “Bunun Assassin’s Creed serinin sıradaki oyunu için olduğunu biliyorsun değil mi? dedi. Bunu bana odisyonun en sonunda söylediği için çok mutluyum…
O zamana kadar katılmış olduğum tüm odisyonlardan ne kadar farklı olduğunu iyi hatırlıyorum. Bir sinema filmi ve tiyatro oyununun kombinasyonu için düzenlenen garip bir seçme gibiydi. Quebec’deydik. Bir sahne ve kameralar vardı. Oditoryumda oturan bir sürü kişi bizi izliyordu. Daha sonra, işin motion capture ve sinematik çekimlerle devam etmesi üzerine kafamda her şey yerine oturdu. Proje için tüm aktör ve aktrisler sinema, tiyatro ve seslendirme konusunda yetkin olmak zorundaydı.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’nin çok büyük hayranlarından biri olarak, Kassandra’yı senden başka bir aktrisin seslendirdiğini hayal bile edemiyorum. Sesin, karakterin her yönü ve haliyle kusursuz bir şekilde bütünlük gösteriyor. Kassanda ve sesin arasına harika bir ahenk var ve bu seviyedeki bir uyum oyun endüstrisinde her zaman rastlanabilen bir şey değil. Bunu nasıl başardın? Dünyanın her yerinde, her gün yüzbinlerce insanın oyunu oynarken saatlerce senin sesini dinlediğini bilmek nasıl bir duygu?
Öncelikle çok teşekkür ederim, bunu duymak gerçekten harika. Uyumun pek çok şeyin birleşimi sonucunda ortaya çıktığını düşünüyorum. Ubisoft Quebec’te projenin başında olanlar bu rol için ne aradıklarını çok iyi biliyorlardı. Zaten eğer doğru hatırlıyorsam bir buçuk yıl gibi bir süredir kadın karakter için odisyonlar düzenliyorlarmış. Hayal ettikleri karakterin temel özellikleri ve hikayesi hakkındaki beklentilerini çok net sundular. Ben elimden geldiğince onların temel düşüncelerine sadık kalmaya çalıştım. Lakin bunu yaparken, Kassandra ile uyumluluk göstereceğini düşündüğüm unsurları da karaktere eklemeyi ihmal etmedim. Kassandra gerçekten çok güçlü bir karakter. Kendisi en nihayetinde bir yarı tanrı ve savaşçı. Bir karakterde bu tip temel elementler genelde doğal karşılanır lakin ben onun aynı zamanda cana yakın ve belirli bir mizah anlayışına sahip olan biri olmasını istedim. Bu karakterler, benim, Michael’ın ve Ubisoft’taki yazarların ortak beyin fırtınaları ve hayal güçlerimizin birleşimi sonucunda hayat buldu.
Bu kadar fazla insanın benim sesime sahip bu karakterle uzun bir serüvene çıktığına alışmak biraz zaman aldı. Açıkçası herkesin Kassandra’yı bu kadar sıcak karşılaması ve onu bu şekilde benimsemiş olması beni çok mutlu ediyor. Bu benim için çok büyük bir hediye.
Uzun bir zamandır bu proje için çalışıyorsun. Sayısız saatlerini yüzlerce sayfa senaryo okuyarak ve seslendirme yaparak geçirdin. Tüm bunlardan sonra karakter ile aranda duygusal bir bağ geliştiğini düşünüyor musun?
Evet, kesinlikle. Proje sona erdikten sonra Kassandra’yı özleyeceğim. Bir buçuk yıldan fazladır bu iş üstünde çalışıyoruz… Hayatımda içinde bulunduğum en uzun soluklu projelerden biri oldu. Bu yüzden bırakmak zor olacaktır. Bittikten sonra Cosplay’e yönelebilirim :)
Eğer gelecekte olası bir Assassin’s Creed Odyssey filminde Kassandra rolü için teklif alırsan kabul eder misin? Böyle bir filmde beraber çalışmak isteyeceğin oyuncular kimler olurdu?
EVET EDERDİM! Filmde Alexios’u veya Deimos’u kesinlikle Michael Antonakos’un canlandırmasını isterdim. Onunla çalışmaktan büyük bir keyif aldım. Böyle bir filmi onsuz hayal bile edemiyorum. Sanırım öyle bir projenin içinde o kadar çok yer almak isterdim ki filmin içinde kimlerin olduğuna pek takılmazdım. Ya da sanırım Anthony Hopkins’i de isterdim.
Son olarak yakın bir zamanda Türkiye’yi ziyaret ettin, ilginç bulduğun şeyler oldu mu? Umarım güzel zaman geçirebilmişsindir.
Türkiye’de harika zaman geçirdim. Maalesef çok fazla vaktim olmadığı için İstanbul’u sadece dört günlüğüne ziyaret edebildim. İnsanların cömertliği ve misafirlerin büyük bir saygıyla ağırlanışına hayran kaldım. Yemekler, müzik, kokular, Boğaz, şakalaşmalar ve mizah… Harika bir rehberim vardı. Çok kısa bir zamanda çok yer görebildim lakin elbette yeterli olmadı. Daha fazlası için yüzde yüz geri döneceğim.

- The Actress With A Mythological Voice: An Interview With Melissanthi Mahut -
I know that you first enrolled in the National Drama School of Greece and then continued on your journey of becoming an actress by spending three years in the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. Did you always want to be an actress? How and when did you decide to commit yourself to this path? What were some challenges that you have encountered along the way?
Unfortunately, I was never one of those lucky people who always knew what they wanted to become and so the decision for me came very late. I think it was an inevitable result rather than a well thought out plan. I remember the day when the decision to follow an acting career struck me. I had never had much experience with it as a teenager and the only thing that led me there was an abnormal love for movies. But the decision stuck. Somehow I couldn’t imagine changing it. There have been times (quite a few actually) during this journey when I questioned the decision, but to be honest with you, I couldn’t see myself doing any other job. The challenges were many, mainly due to the fact that in the beginning I became quite disillusioned about what the job meant. I realised that it wasn’t just about the art in itself but a combination of PR, socializing, and marketing that I hated at first and then ended up accepting and complying to in a way. The industry is a very harsh one, there is a lot of competition and a lot of failed auditions and rejections. But when it works out and things start rolling, it is one of the most rewarding jobs.
The art of acting and theatre itself was founded and created by your brilliant ancestors. Greece gave birth to one of the first known legendary actors and playwrights ever in human history. As a Greek actress, do you feel like this historical fact adds pressure and responsibilities on your shoulders? Do you think your culture influenced and shaped your work in any way?
Wonderful question. Yes I believe it did. When I got into acting I decided to apply to drama schools that offered a lot of classical training. I believed that it would offer a more rounded/complete approach to acting. To this day the plays I love reading, watching and playing the most are the classics. I have a soft spot for ancient greek tragedies. I believe that they touched on subjects that are still incredibly relevant and the writers’ intelligence and perception of the world and human nature always shocks me. I wouldn’t say I feel pressure, but I definitely feel a responsibility towards the text and the play, especially when I do theatre.
When it comes to projects, are there any kind of roles you wouldn’t want to give life to or any character that you wouldn’t want to voice? Would you be comfortable bringing a Turkish character to life? Do you think these types of limitations contradicts with the spirit or essence of acting?
No, there aren’t any characters that I wouldn’t want to voice. Or give life to. Of course I would love to give voice to a Turkish character. Although I haven’t nailed the accent quite yet, and I definitely haven’t got the language down at all, apart from a couple of phrases, but who knows, maybe one day...
I think that having a prejudice about who you portray as an actor is fundamentally against the principles of the profession and yes of course these types of limitations contradict the essence of acting. As far as I am concerned, acting is one of the most beautiful jobs on the planet, mainly because if it is done right and in the right spirit then it is the job that makes you understand human beings more profoundly than any other. I love it because you could be asked to play anything from a dictator to a petty annoying crook and whether you “like” this person or not is irrelevant, you still have to portray them and make the audience like them and want to hear their story. In order to be able to do that, you have to dive into the characters psychology, have to understand why they do what they do, why they lash out like they do, why they behave the way they do towards others. Actors have to not judge. Anyone. I find that fascinating. After a while you find yourself understanding the motives behind the most absurd behaviours without judging. I like to think that leads to a more peaceful and ‘to the point’ co-existence with other human beings.
Before diving into questions related to the Odyssey, I would like to ask you some questions that I refer to as “snack-questions” which are always fun and it is interesting to see the answers.
Do you think Helen of Sparta did the right thing by escaping to Asia Minor with Paris of Troy even though their love ended many lives?
Ha! Assuming that the story is true and that Helen and her love life weren’t a fabrication to put a romantic and interesting spin on a mundane story of one region just wanting to occupy another region for military or commercial purposes… then I would say yes. Menelaos could have taken a more diplomatic approach and not end lives. But then we wouldn’t have the story to tell would we?
If you would had to choose one island in the Aegean Sea where you would have to spend the rest of your life, which one would it be?
There are a few. I like to think that there is an island for each mood and time in life. BUT. I think that, for me, there will always be two «go to» islands.. One is Hydra and the other is Patmos. The first I have associated with family trips, childhood and endless summers of running around barefoot and the second with a rediscovery of what it feels like to be free from worry and troubles. For me they both represent a version of a “Never Never land”. A place where you get to be a child again. A place where you will never grow up and will always be there to remind you of times past and yet to come.
Let’s say the pagan Greeks were right about the Olympian Gods and when you die the first thing you see is Zeus sitting on a gold throne and looking directly at you. What would your reaction be?
I would ask questions. Then I would ask for a super power. And a lightning show.
When you go to a taverna what are the essential things you want to see on your table?
Bread. Fish. Olive oil. Feta. Dolma. And wine.
Have any of your fans approached you and referred to you as Kassandra because they forgot your name? If not, what would your reaction be if that happened?
The only instance where that has come close to happening was at the arrivals gate in Athens. I was on the phone with a friend and out of the corner of my eye I see a security guard waving me to the side. I obviously start to panic and try to think of all the things I could have done wrong. When he marches over he stops, stares at me very intensely and asks me for my name. I reply as politely as I can and he just bursts into a huge smile and in front of the entire queue says: OMG I CANT BELIEVE I AM TALLKING TO KASSANDRA!! And then he runs away and pulls out his tablet and starts showing videos of ACO to the other security guards. That was pretty weird. Other than that nothing similar has happened.
Which do you think is harder, acting or voice acting? What are some differences and similarities between the two? Do you enjoy or prefer one over the other?
There are definitely difficulties for all types of acting. Theatre, film, voice, all have unique challenges. But I think that once you figure out the approach for all three, things start becoming a bit easier. Voice acting is challenging because of the fact that you have nobody to act with, if that makes sense. A lot of the times you don’t even get to hear the response of the other actor that you are supposed to be having a scene with, because they have simply not been recorded yet. There is a lot of imagination required. Also since it is very static (there is not a lot of room for movement in the voice-booth) you have to constantly remind yourself to keep energy up and be aware of the environments the character would be in. If they are outdoors, it requires a different projection and way of talking than if they are indoors and really close to the other character they are having the conversation with etc. I find it a very interesting and different way to stretch the imagination. I don’t know what I prefer to be honest. I like acting for video games a lot and since it is my first time doing it I have a soft spot for it now because it is new and exiting.
Would you want to tell us about your feelings and experience at the time you were auditioning to voice Kassandra? What was the process like?
When I first got the call for the audition I had absolutely no idea what I was going to be auditioning for… I knew it was for a big company and I knew that it was for a lead role but other than that I had no idea. I think the first time I began to grasp what was happening was in my final round of auditions in Canada. Obviously now since I was going to Ubi there were only a few things it could be, but I still couldn’t believe it. Actually, Michael, who had by this point already been cast as Alexios and had done a couple of recordings and was there to help out with the audition of Kassandra and do “chemistry” tests, was the one who told me: “You know that this is for the lead role in the next Assassin’s Creed series right”? I am very glad he told me at the end of the audition… I remember thinking how different this process was in comparison to all other auditions. It seemed like a weird combination of a film and theatre audition. There were cameras and there was a stage and a lot of people sitting in an auditorium in Quebec watching us. Afterwards, seeing how the whole thing works with Mocap and the cinematic shots, it all made sense. The actors had to be able to do it all. Film, theatre and voice.
As a huge fan of the game, I literally cannot imagine someone else voicing Kassandra other than you. Your voice perfectly fits into every single aspect of the character. There is a wonderful coherence between your voice and Kassandra, and this level of compatibility is a unique occurrence in the industry. How did you achieve this? How do you feel about the fact that thousands of individuals around the world listen to your voice as they play the game for hours?
First of all, thank you very much, it is wonderful to hear that. I think the compatibility was a mixture of things. I believe the guys at Ubi Quebec had a really clear idea of what they were looking for. If I am not mistaken they were auditioning for about a year and a half for the female character. They gave very clear indications of how they had imagined the basic elements of the character and their journey throughout the game. I tried as much as possible to stay true to what their original idea was and then add a couple of elements that I found along the way and that I wanted to bring to Kassandra. She is a strong character-after all she is a demi-god and a warrior so those elements were very straight forward, but I wanted her to also be approachable, at times warm and with a sense of humour. It was a brainstorming between Michael and myself combined with the imagination of the writing team that brought these characters to life.
It took some getting used to that so many people would be listening to my voice and journeying with this character and honestly I am so happy that people seem to have welcomed Kass so warmly into the brotherhood. It is a great gift.
You have worked on this project for a long time. You have spent countless hours voicing the character and reading hundreds of pages of the scripts. Do you feel that you have developed an emotional connection with the character?
Yes, absolutely. I will miss Kassandra when the project is over with. We have been working on this for more than a year and a half now… It’s one of the longest running projects I think I have worked on in my life so letting it go will not be easy. I might turn to cosplay. :)
If the creators of Assassin’s Creed decide to make a movie in the future where they want to see you as Kassandra, would you accept it? If you were to accept, which actresses or actors would you like to see along side you as the cast?
UHHH YES. I would definitely want Michael Antonakos as Alexios or Deimos, whatever they choose. I have loved working with him and couldn’t imagine this process or film without him. Other than that… man I would just so love to do the film that I wouldn’t mind. At all. Ok maybe I want Anthony Hopkins.
Lastly, I know you recently traveled to Turkey, what were some things that you found interesting? I hope you had great time.
I had a wonderful time in Turkey. I visited Istanbul but only for four days sadly I didn’t have more time. I loved how generous the people are, how guests are treated with so much respect and care. The food, the music, the smells, the Bosphorus, the banter and the humour. I had a wonderful guide and got to see a lot in a very limited amount of time, but definitely not enough. I am going back 100%.

Oyunculuğu mu yoksa seslendirmeyi mi daha zor buluyorsun? İkisinin arasındaki benzerlikler ve farklılıklar neler? Birini diğerine tercih eder misin?
Tüm oyunculuk çeşitlerinin kendine has zorlukları var. Elbette tiyatro, sinema ve seslendirme için de geçerli bu. Üçü içinde gerekli olan doğru yaklaşımı bulduğunuz ve geliştirdiğiniz zaman işler biraz daha kolay hale geliyor.
Aralarından en çok seslendirmeyi zor buluyorum sanırım çünkü yanınızda sizinle rol alan birileri yok. Çoğu zaman aynı sahneyi paylaştığınız karakterlerin cevaplarını bile duymuyorsunuz çünkü daha kaydedilmemiş oluyor. Hayal gücünüzü çok fazla kullanmanız gerekiyor. Diğer yandan, seslendirmeyi yaptığınız mekan çok küçük ve hareket alanınız kısıtlı oluyor. Bu yüzden çoğu zaman sabit durmak mecburiyetinde oluyorsunuz. Kendinize sürekli olarak enerjinizi yüksek bir seviyede tutmanız gerektiğini hatırlatmak zorundasınız. Karakterin bulunacağı ortamı çok iyi bir şekilde hayal etmelisiniz. Eğer dışarıda olacaksa ona göre, içeride kapalı bir mekanda olacaksa veya çok yakınındaki bir kişiyle konuşuyorsa ona göre farklı bir öngörü ve konuşma şekli gerekiyor. Bunun hayal gücünü genişleten farklı ve ilginç bir yol olduğunu düşünüyorum.
Açıkçası hangisini hangisine tercih ettiğimi bilmiyorum. Video oyunlarının bir parçası olmayı çok seviyorum. Sanırım benim için bir ilk olduğundan dolayı bu tür projelere bir zaafım oluştu. Heyecan verici buluyorum.

Odisyon için ilk defa telefon aldığım zaman tam olarak ne için seçmelere gireceğim hakkında hiçbir fikrim yoktu. Sadece büyük bir şirketin projesi olduğunu ve başrol için olduğunu biliyordum. Sanırım ilk defa nasıl bir proje içinde olduğumu anlamaya başladığım zaman Kanada’da seçmelerin son aşamasındaydım. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’nin çok büyük hayranlarından biri olarak, Kassandra’yı senden başka bir aktrisin seslendirdiğini hayal bile edemiyorum. Sesin, karakterin her yönü ve haliyle kusursuz bir şekilde bütünlük gösteriyor. Kassanda ve sesin arasına harika bir ahenk var ve bu seviyedeki bir uyum oyun endüstrisinde her zaman rastlanabilen bir şey değil. Bunu nasıl başardın? Dünyanın her yerinde, her gün yüzbinlerce insanın oyunu oynarken saatlerce senin sesini dinlediğini bilmek nasıl bir duygu?
Öncelikle çok teşekkür ederim, bunu duymak gerçekten harika. Uyumun pek çok şeyin birleşimi sonucunda ortaya çıktığını düşünüyorum. Ubisoft Quebec’te projenin başında olanlar bu rol için ne aradıklarını çok iyi biliyorlardı. Zaten eğer doğru hatırlıyorsam bir buçuk yıl gibi bir süredir kadın karakter için odisyonlar düzenliyorlarmış. Hayal ettikleri karakterin temel özellikleri ve hikayesi hakkındaki beklentilerini çok net sundular. Ben elimden geldiğince onların temel düşüncelerine sadık kalmaya çalıştım. Kendisi en nihayetinde bir yarı tanrı ve savaşçı. Bir karakterde bu tip temel elementler genelde doğal karşılanır lakin ben onun aynı zamanda cana yakın ve belirli bir mizah anlayışına sahip olan biri olmasını istedim. Bu karakterler, benim, Michael’ın ve Ubisoft’taki yazarların ortak beyin fırtınaları ve hayal güçlerimizin birleşimi sonucunda hayat buldu.
Bu kadar fazla insanın benim sesime sahip bu karakterle uzun bir serüvene çıktığına alışmak biraz zaman aldı. Açıkçası herkesin Kassandra’yı bu kadar sıcak karşılaması ve onu bu şekilde benimsemiş olması beni çok mutlu ediyor. Bu benim için çok büyük bir hediye.
Uzun bir zamandır bu proje için çalışıyorsun. Sayısız saatlerini yüzlerce sayfa senaryo okuyarak ve seslendirme yaparak geçirdin. Tüm bunlardan sonra karakter ile aranda duygusal bir bağ geliştiğini düşünüyor musun?
Evet, kesinlikle. Proje sona erdikten sonra Kassandra’yı özleyeceğim. Bir buçuk yıldan fazladır bu iş üstünde çalışıyoruz… Hayatımda içinde bulunduğum en uzun soluklu projelerden biri oldu. Bu yüzden bırakmak zor olacaktır. Bittikten sonra Cosplay’e yönelebilirim :)
Eğer gelecekte olası bir Assassin’s Creed Odyssey filminde Kassandra rolü için teklif alırsan kabul eder misin? Böyle bir filmde beraber çalışmak isteyeceğin oyuncular kimler olurdu?
EVET EDERDİM! Filmde Alexios’u veya Deimos’u kesinlikle Michael Antonakos’un canlandırmasını isterdim. Onunla çalışmaktan büyük bir keyif aldım. Böyle bir filmi onsuz hayal bile edemiyorum. Sanırım öyle bir projenin içinde o kadar çok yer almak isterdim ki filmin içinde kimlerin olduğuna pek takılmazdım. Ya da sanırım Anthony Hopkins’i de isterdim.

Türkiye’de harika zaman geçirdim. Maalesef çok fazla vaktim olmadığı için İstanbul’u sadece dört günlüğüne ziyaret edebildim. İnsanların cömertliği ve misafirlerin büyük bir saygıyla ağırlanışına hayran kaldım. Yemekler, müzik, kokular, Boğaz, şakalaşmalar ve mizah… Harika bir rehberim vardı. I know that you first enrolled in the National Drama School of Greece and then continued on your journey of becoming an actress by spending three years in the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. Did you always want to be an actress? How and when did you decide to commit yourself to this path? What were some challenges that you have encountered along the way?
Unfortunately, I was never one of those lucky people who always knew what they wanted to become and so the decision for me came very late. I think it was an inevitable result rather than a well thought out plan. I remember the day when the decision to follow an acting career struck me. I had never had much experience with it as a teenager and the only thing that led me there was an abnormal love for movies. But the decision stuck. Somehow I couldn’t imagine changing it. There have been times (quite a few actually) during this journey when I questioned the decision, but to be honest with you, I couldn’t see myself doing any other job. The challenges were many, mainly due to the fact that in the beginning I became quite disillusioned about what the job meant. I realised that it wasn’t just about the art in itself but a combination of PR, socializing, and marketing that I hated at first and then ended up accepting and complying to in a way. The industry is a very harsh one, there is a lot of competition and a lot of failed auditions and rejections. But when it works out and things start rolling, it is one of the most rewarding jobs.
The art of acting and theatre itself was founded and created by your brilliant ancestors. Greece gave birth to one of the first known legendary actors and playwrights ever in human history. As a Greek actress, do you feel like this historical fact adds pressure and responsibilities on your shoulders? Do you think your culture influenced and shaped your work in any way?
Wonderful question. Yes I believe it did. When I got into acting I decided to apply to drama schools that offered a lot of classical training. I believed that it would offer a more rounded/complete approach to acting. To this day the plays I love reading, watching and playing the most are the classics. I have a soft spot for ancient greek tragedies. I believe that they touched on subjects that are still incredibly relevant and the writers’ intelligence and perception of the world and human nature always shocks me. I wouldn’t say I feel pressure, but I definitely feel a responsibility towards the text and the play, especially when I do theatre.
When it comes to projects, are there any kind of roles you wouldn’t want to give life to or any character that you wouldn’t want to voice? Would you be comfortable bringing a Turkish character to life? Do you think these types of limitations contradicts with the spirit or essence of acting?
No, there aren’t any characters that I wouldn’t want to voice. Or give life to. Of course I would love to give voice to a Turkish character. Although I haven’t nailed the accent quite yet, and I definitely haven’t got the language down at all, apart from a couple of phrases, but who knows, maybe one day...
I think that having a prejudice about who you portray as an actor is fundamentally against the principles of the profession and yes of course these types of limitations contradict the essence of acting. As far as I am concerned, acting is one of the most beautiful jobs on the planet, mainly because if it is done right and in the right spirit then it is the job that makes you understand human beings more profoundly than any other. I love it because you could be asked to play anything from a dictator to a petty annoying crook and whether you “like” this person or not is irrelevant, you still have to portray them and make the audience like them and want to hear their story. In order to be able to do that, you have to dive into the characters psychology, have to understand why they do what they do, why they lash out like they do, why they behave the way they do towards others. Actors have to not judge. Anyone. I find that fascinating. After a while you find yourself understanding the motives behind the most absurd behaviours without judging. I like to think that leads to a more peaceful and ‘to the point’ co-existence with other human beings.
Before diving into questions related to the Odyssey, I would like to ask you some questions that I refer to as “snack-questions” which are always fun and it is interesting to see the answers.
Do you think Helen of Sparta did the right thing by escaping to Asia Minor with Paris of Troy even though their love ended many lives?
Ha! Assuming that the story is true and that Helen and her love life weren’t a fabrication to put a romantic and interesting spin on a mundane story of one region just wanting to occupy another region for military or commercial purposes… then I would say yes. Menelaos could have taken a more diplomatic approach and not end lives. But then we wouldn’t have the story to tell would we?
If you would had to choose one island in the Aegean Sea where you would have to spend the rest of your life, which one would it be?
There are a few. I like to think that there is an island for each mood and time in life. BUT. I think that, for me, there will always be two «go to» islands.. One is Hydra and the other is Patmos. The first I have associated with family trips, childhood and endless summers of running around barefoot and the second with a rediscovery of what it feels like to be free from worry and troubles. For me they both represent a version of a “Never Never land”. A place where you get to be a child again. A place where you will never grow up and will always be there to remind you of times past and yet to come.
Let’s say the pagan Greeks were right about the Olympian Gods and when you die the first thing you see is Zeus sitting on a gold throne and looking directly at you. What would your reaction be?
I would ask questions. Then I would ask for a super power. And a lightning show.
When you go to a taverna what are the essential things you want to see on your table?
Bread. Fish. Olive oil. Feta. Dolma. And wine.
Have any of your fans approached you and referred to you as Kassandra because they forgot your name? If not, what would your reaction be if that happened?
The only instance where that has come close to happening was at the arrivals gate in Athens. I was on the phone with a friend and out of the corner of my eye I see a security guard waving me to the side. I obviously start to panic and try to think of all the things I could have done wrong. When he marches over he stops, stares at me very intensely and asks me for my name. I reply as politely as I can and he just bursts into a huge smile and in front of the entire queue says: OMG I CANT BELIEVE I AM TALLKING TO KASSANDRA!! And then he runs away and pulls out his tablet and starts showing videos of ACO to the other security guards. That was pretty weird. Other than that nothing similar has happened.
Which do you think is harder, acting or voice acting? What are some differences and similarities between the two? Do you enjoy or prefer one over the other?
There are definitely difficulties for all types of acting. Theatre, film, voice, all have unique challenges. But I think that once you figure out the approach for all three, things start becoming a bit easier. Voice acting is challenging because of the fact that you have nobody to act with, if that makes sense. A lot of the times you don’t even get to hear the response of the other actor that you are supposed to be having a scene with, because they have simply not been recorded yet. There is a lot of imagination required. Also since it is very static (there is not a lot of room for movement in the voice-booth) you have to constantly remind yourself to keep energy up and be aware of the environments the character would be in. If they are outdoors, it requires a different projection and way of talking than if they are indoors and really close to the other character they are having the conversation with etc. I find it a very interesting and different way to stretch the imagination. I don’t know what I prefer to be honest. I like acting for video games a lot and since it is my first time doing it I have a soft spot for it now because it is new and exiting.
Would you want to tell us about your feelings and experience at the time you were auditioning to voice Kassandra? What was the process like?
When I first got the call for the audition I had absolutely no idea what I was going to be auditioning for… I knew it was for a big company and I knew that it was for a lead role but other than that I had no idea. I think the first time I began to grasp what was happening was in my final round of auditions in Canada. Obviously now since I was going to Ubi there were only a few things it could be, but I still couldn’t believe it. Actually, Michael, who had by this point already been cast as Alexios and had done a couple of recordings and was there to help out with the audition of Kassandra and do “chemistry” tests, was the one who told me: “You know that this is for the lead role in the next Assassin’s Creed series right”? I am very glad he told me at the end of the audition… I remember thinking how different this process was in comparison to all other auditions. It seemed like a weird combination of a film and theatre audition. There were cameras and there was a stage and a lot of people sitting in an auditorium in Quebec watching us. Afterwards, seeing how the whole thing works with Mocap and the cinematic shots, it all made sense. The actors had to be able to do it all. Film, theatre and voice.
As a huge fan of the game, I literally cannot imagine someone else voicing Kassandra other than you. Your voice perfectly fits into every single aspect of the character. There is a wonderful coherence between your voice and Kassandra, and this level of compatibility is a unique occurrence in the industry. How did you achieve this? How do you feel about the fact that thousands of individuals around the world listen to your voice as they play the game for hours?
First of all, thank you very much, it is wonderful to hear that. I think the compatibility was a mixture of things. The food, the music, the smells, the Bosphorus, the banter and the humour. I had a wonderful guide and got to see a lot in a very limited amount of time, but definitely not enough. I am going back 100%.
